I’m a Christian that supports gay marriage.
I have been a Christian since I was a child. My faith has always been the thing that keeps me grounded, the lenses through which I see the world, and the most defining thing about me. It has always been real to me. Moving into adulthood has not made being a person of faith easier, in fact it became much more difficult. I don’t know all the answers and I constantly wrestle with God to try and determine what the expression of my faith should be.
In the ongoing debate with gay marriage I have something to say to the groups at odds with each other.
Fellow Christians: We do not own marriage. We did, I mean God invented it with Adam and Eve. Then somewhere along the way marriage was no longer property of the church and has become property of the government. Beyond the ceremony it has implication on taxes, benefits, adoption rights, and …..well this argument may not matter to you. But please listen to this; your words and actions leave emotional scars on your enemy. If you have any concern for the eternal souls of those you disagree with, you should change your rhetoric. If you have no such concern I ask you to pray and seek God about the central meaning of our faith. Our heritage is responsible for a lot of bloodshed for the sake of being right. In recent American history we have been on the wrong side of slavery and equality for women. I don’t know all the answers is in this debate and I wrestle with this a lot. I may be wrong. However I think I’m correct saying there is no reason to be mean-spirited and not speak to one another with love.
To the gay community: I’m sorry. There was a time in my life I thought everything about you was wrong. I made jokes, hateful remarks, and hurt many of you. Maybe worse of all many times in life I was silent. I’m sorry you are the target of hateful remarks from the church. It saddens me that hate and prejudice have dominated the representation of my faith to your community; I do not think Jesus is happy about that. I think there are more like me trying to figure our and struggle with what is right. For some reason being right means a lot to us…even when were wrong. Please know there is at lease 1 Christian that loves you and prays there will someday be a reconciliation.
